Our Board of Directors and our community partners and supporters have ensured that the bold vision for establishing a Children’s Advocacy Centre in Victoria ORCA has remained alive and vibrant. As Victoria Police Chief Jamie Graham stated in an early planning meeting, “There’s no downside to this…(ORCA) is a good idea”.
In October 2010, following recommendations set out by Steve Sullivan, former Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime, the federal government announced a funding initiative to promote the development of CACs across Canada. ORCA Society is among the first organizations to receive funding for this purpose. In February 2011 the Department of Justice hosted the Knowledge Exchange on Child Advocacy Centres in Ottawa, bringing together professionals from across the country. Information about this meeting and the CAC initiative in Canada can be found at www.cac-cae.ca
Generous donations from the Sun Star Fund, the Echo Bay Foundation and the Steve Nash Foundation and grants from the federal Department of Justice have provided momentum and have enabled planning to progress to a point where the creation of ORCA Centre is now in sight.
Currently, the top priority of the ORCA Children’s Advocacy Centre Society is securing policy and funding support for ORCA Centre from the provincial government of British Columbia.
ORCA Society also welcomes contributions in any amount from individuals and organizations that wish to help to establish ORCA Centre. Creating ORCA Centre will take the support of the whole community and interested supporters like you!
